Still alive...

What the hell is the point of a blog when you have nothing to talk about? I ask you.

The Skeptics' Guide hits YouTube!

Good news! The crew from one of my favorite podcasts has made the jump to YouTube! The Skeptics' Guide to the Universe is a podcast dealing with critical thinking and skepticism, and promoting science and reason. It's one of the top rated science podcasts on iTunes, and I've been an avid listener for some time now.

Well, they are now taking portions of their hour and a half-long podcasts and uploading them to YouTube along with some visual aids. So far there is only one video, but it's a great start.

Anyway, be sure to check out their YouTube page, their website, and if you enjoy their stuff, I definitely recommend subscribing to the full podcast on iTunes!

The SGU is a weekly podacst hosted by Dr. Steven Novella, a neurologist and professor at Yale. It's produced in association with the James Randi Educational Foundation, the New England Skeptic Society, and Skepchick.org.

So long, George...a voice of reason

George Carlin died Sunday. This guy was a great thinker, and a funny guy to boot!

He was a little crass at times, but the world needs more outspoken atheists like that.

You'll be missed, George.

Some Recognition on RedBubble

Okay, so this is a poor excuse for a blog entry, but I really have nothing more interesting to share.

As many of you might know, I have a photo website where I display and sometimes sell some of my work. There is a large community of photographers of all abilities there, and groups dedicated to certain themes or types of photos. Anyway, I few of those groups have been kind enough to recognize some of my work.

-Moment of Contact has been made the Avatar photo for the Primates group! This image was also just selected as the image of the week in the same group !

-Dutch Row Houses is one of the featured works in the Dutch Touch group.

- I’m also one of the Featured Members in the Bridges group!

Anyhoo, not exactly the Nobel Prize or anything, but I'll take what recognition I can get. By the way, the pics attached above are linked to thumbnails on the site. If you want to see better quality images just visit my page (linked above), or click on the names of the individual photos to go to their pages.

Atheism "Dangerous For Our Children..."

In a spectacular display of bigotry, Illinois Rep. Monique Davis attacked Atheist Activist Rob Sherman as he testified before the House State Government Administration Committee in Springfield last Wednesday. To paraphrase, she told him that he was a horrible person who had no right to be there and that he should "get out of that seat." You can read the article about it in the Chicaco Tribune here.

I'm glad to see this is getting some national news coverage, since it looked at first like it was going to be ignored. I emailed the American Atheists and Keith Olbermann about it on Monday, because they hadn't covered it at all and it seemed they should be the front lines of the push for national coverage on something like this. The American Atheists were nice enough to respond that they had seen it, and sure enough, they covered it in their blog. Keith Olbermann and MSNBC didn't respond, but they definitely did it justice by covering it appropriately, though I doubt it was due to my email (but one can hope, right?). Here's the clip:

This whole exchange was so misguided, I'm glad that others are as incensed about it as I am. Here's the text of the entire rant, which is fortunately on public record:

Davis: I don’t know what you have against God, but some of us don’t have much against him. We look forward to him and his blessings. And it’s really a tragedy -- it’s tragic -- when a person who is engaged in anything related to God, they want to fight. They want to fight prayer in school.

I don’t see you (Sherman) fighting guns in school. You know?

I’m trying to understand the philosophy that you want to spread in the state of Illinois. This is the Land of Lincoln. This is the Land of Lincoln where people believe in God, where people believe in protecting their children.… What you have to spew and spread is extremely dangerous, it’s dangerous--

Sherman: What’s dangerous, ma’am?

Davis: It’s dangerous to the progression of this state. And it’s dangerous for our children to even know that your philosophy exists! Now you will go to court to fight kids to have the opportunity to be quiet for a minute. But damn if you’ll go to [court] to fight for them to keep guns out of their hands. I am fed up! Get out of that seat!

Sherman: Thank you for sharing your perspective with me, and I’m sure that if this matter does go to court---

Davis: You have no right to be here! We believe in something. You believe in destroying! You believe in destroying what this state was built upon.

Truly amazing. Fortunately for Davis, she didn't say these words to a Muslim, Buddhist or Hindu. Attacking a religion with hate like this would no doubt have the whole world up in arms. But attack an Atheist and you're lucky if it makes the papers! Oh, in case you were wondering, the hearing was concerning a controversial million dollar government grant for Pilgrim Baptist Church.

Another Photo Website

Well, it appears that Adobe has started up a photoshop online site. It's still in beta, but anyone can sign up...even little old me. So I did. I decided to upload some of my work that I don't think is good enough to put up on my RedBubble page. You can find my album here:

Anyway, here's hoping this works. You can embed your albums using HTML (which is what I did above). If you'd rather just follow a regular old link, you can do that by visiting my page at Photoshop here.

If anyone is interesting in creating their own account there, it has some really great features. You can upload up to 2 Gigs worth of photos, and you can do basic Photoshop editing right there on the website. Of course, being a newer site, it's rather buggy. I'm sure they'll work through these in time. Check it out at https://www.photoshop.com/express/landing.html

Skeptic Crusader

I don't know how many of you frequent sites like youTube. But, if you do, chances are you might cross paths with a weird video or two. Go have a look, and you will find literally thousands of videos of ghosts, monsters, gnomes, angels, and UFOs. Cool, huh?!?! Okay, here's an example that is extraordinary because it's actually from a real US TV News segment!

Okay, spooky stuff, huh? I actually was first alerted to this video a few months ago, when one of my favorite podcasts (SGU) mentioned it and offered a few theories about what it is.

So... I recently ran across a guy calling himself "Captain Disillusion," who has some excellent youTube debunking videos! Yeah, he's a bit weird, but he knows his stuff. The vids are actually very entertaining, so I thought I would share. Here's one about that very same "Blue Ghost" from the clip above.

If you enjoyed that, you can look at some of his other debunking videos here. Keep up the great work Captain Disillusion!
